The publication of this guide would not have been possible without the assistance of Amy Skwira who typed and proofread the manuscript.

INTRODUCTION

The Naval War College's Naval Historical Collection contains the College archives, manuscript collections and oral histories that document the history of the institution, the Navy in Narragansett Bay and the history of naval warfare. Materials treating Latin American and the Caribbean area are found in all of the above categories for both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

This guide is divided into seven sections: archives, manuscripts, manuscript items, oral histories, newspapers, pamphlets and microfilm. The holdings are identified by title, author, date, and contain brief descriptions of content. Those desiring further information may contact the curator.

The guide will be useful to Naval historians, Latin American historians and Diplomatic historians who are interested in the role the Navy played in Latin America during the last one hundred and twenty years, the service's response to our perceived security interests there and U.S. foreign policy south of the border. Personal descriptions of cruises, port visits, people, topography and political conditions by naval officers are contained in these sources as well. The publication of this guide will acquaint scholars with documentation that heretofore has not been widely known; hopefully, it will stimulate research in this area and ensure preservation of these unique sources.

The Naval Historical Collection is located in Mahan Hall at the Naval War College, Newport, RI 02841-1207. Department hours are Monday-Friday, 0800-1630. The telephone number is 401-841-2435; fax, 401-841-7790; and e-mail, evelyn.cherpak@usnwc.edu.
