Professor Abramson joined the JMO faculty in 2011, serving as the JMO Chairman as a Navy Captain for two and a half years before transitioning to the civilian faculty in 2014. A Joint Qualified Officer, he was a career U.S. Navy Surface Warfare Officer, serving aboard cruisers and destroyers since the mid-1980s, mostly in the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans and the Arabian Gulf.
He served on the staff of Commander, U.S. SEVENTH Fleet as the Southeast Asia Pol-Mil Affairs officer, and on the staffs of U.S. Central Command and U.S. Strategic Command's Joint Functional Component Command - Integrated Missile Defense (JFCC IMD) in Colorado Springs. He commanded both USS CURTIS WILBUR (DDG 54) and USS SHILOH (CG 67), both ships forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan.
Through the course of his career, he participated in numerous operations and naval/joint exercises, including Earnest Will, Desert Storm, Desert Fox, four iterations of Team Spirit, several of Annualex, too many CSOFEXs, SHAREMs, ASWEXs and BMDEXs to count, and he culminated his seagoing career as Maritime Ballistic Missile Defense Task Group Commander countering North Korean ballistic missile operations in 2009.
