The Newport Arctic Scholars Initiative will host the 2018-2019 cohort of Newport Arctic Scholars in Newport for their mid-year group meeting on Oct. 16-18.

The Newport Arctic Scholars Initiative is a U.S. Naval War College program that brings together scholars and sailors from Arctic nations to address seapower-related research questions concerning the collective defense and security of the region. To learn more about the program, view the video here.

At our inaugural meeting this past spring, we came as individual sailors and scholars from seven Arctic states and left as a team focusing our research on the themes of confidence building measures, awareness and capabilities. We committed our effort to asking multidisciplinary research questions that are relevant and important to our countries and our naval services.

The Newport Arctic Scholars Initiative will meet at the halfway mark once again to share our progress and our vision for research to meet the challenges, opportunities, and responsibilities that an opening Arctic brings to Arctic nations and navies. The agenda for the Newport Arctic Seminar II is simple yet challenging - bring together 18 navy leaders and scholars and their co-lead scholars from the Arctic region to refine an ambitious research agenda that develops new knowledge, strategy recommendations, and engagements. Our agenda creates an academic environment for the group to debate and decide on the principles of seapower for the Arctic region and how the group will communicate their research to key decision-makers.

The final meeting will take place in Spring 2019 at the Royal Norwegian Naval Academy in Bergen, Norway.
