Duncan takes over as Naval War College provost

NEWPORT, R.I. – Lewis M. Duncan assumed his duties as provost at the U.S. Naval War College (NWC) Monday, officially becoming the college’s chief operating officer.

Duncan comes to NWC from Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., where he served as president from 2004 to 2014. At Rollins, he also held the George D. and Harriet W. Cornell Professorship of Distinguished Presidential Leadership.

Prior to that, Duncan was dean of engineering and professor of engineering sciences at the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H.

He received his B.A. (1973) in physics and mathematics, and M.A. (1976) and Ph.D. (1977) in space physics, all from Rice University, Houston, Texas.

The NWC started 130 years ago as a small institution with mostly summer courses. It has evolved into a one year, resident program that graduates about 600 students a year, and a robust distance program that graduates about 1,000 students a year.

Duncan's bio can be viewed here.

**The original announcement released on Jan. 12 inaccurately referred to Duncan as the chief academic officer; he's actually the chief operating officer.
