Greetings from Newport Rhode Island, home to the United States Naval War College, but more colloquially, “The Navy’s Home of Thought.”

This is the first issue of The Beacon, a U.S. Naval War College newsletter you will see quarterly. The purpose of The Beacon, as stated in its subtitle, is to shine a light on the things we’re doing here which affect you out there. The intended audience is anyone who might benefit from the wide array of work we are doing in Newport to educate and develop leaders, define the future Navy and its roles and missions, support combat readiness, strengthen global maritime partnerships, promote ethics and leadership throughout the force, contribute knowledge to shape effective decisions through our Maritime History Center expertise, and - through the Stockton Center for the Study of International Law - provide expertise and advice to the international legal community.

Our mission over the past few years has grown to the point where – although still a shore command – we are engaged with the fleet and operational Navy on a daily basis. We are many things to many people. But instead of me simply listing what we are doing, through this newsletter I want you to see and read who we are and what we are doing. If there’s something in this newsletter which catches your attention, give us a call or drop us an email. Together we can be stronger!
