Naval Command College
U.S. Naval War College welcomes senior officers from navies around the world to its Naval Command College (NCC). Since its founding in 1956, more than 2,100 officers from 91 nations have completed the program, with more than half reaching flag rank. NCC alumni include ministers of defense, ambassadors, heads of state, and heads of services.

Each year, representatives from more than 40 countries are nominated to attend our 11-month residential program, which is designed to build trust, confidence, and cooperation between American and international officers. While in Newport, you’ll develop your strategic planning skills, and through our Field Studies Program, you’ll gain an understanding of American government, human rights, and the role of the free press and free market.
Core Curriculum
You’ll hone your strategic, analytical, and management skills through four core subject areas: national security decision making, strategy and policy, joint military operations, and Leadership in the Profession of Arms.

Featured Faculty
Jon R. Huggins
Jon Huggins is an associate professor for International Programs at the Naval War College. He has worked across four continents as a maritime security consultant for the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, the International Maritime Organization, the G7++ Presidency and the commercial shipping industry. As director of the Oceans Beyond Piracy (OBP) program, his organization’s research was featured by the BBC, New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Al Jazeera. OBP was also a key contributor to the release of 44 piracy hostages held in Somalia for up to four years. A career Navy P-3 NFO, he also served at NATO and EU HQs in Brussels, 7th Fleet HQ, as a FEF Fellow, and the CNO Executive Panel staff.
Andrew George Schanno
Capt. Andy Schanno serves as Deputy Dean of the International Programs. Previously, Capt. Schanno acted as director of the Maritime Security and Governance Staff Course (MSGSC) and International Maritime Staff Officers Course (IMSOC). Prior to the Naval War College, Capt. Schanno served as the commanding officer of Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, Michigan, with past assignments in Southeast Alaska, and Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington D.C. Prior to the Coast Guard, he served in the United States Army with deployments to Bosnia, Albania-Kosovo and Iraq. He holds a Bachelor of Science from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, and a Master of Science from Purdue University.
