U.S. Naval War College at the Naval Postgraduate School

U.S. Naval War College (NWC) Monterey is a satellite office of NWC, College of Distance Education (CDE) located on campus at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, California. In partnership with NPS, we provide qualified officers and select DoD civilians attending NPS the opportunity to earn an NWC diploma and Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) Phase I credit.

Who is Eligible

Active Officers and Federal Government Civilians attending NPS can apply for the program, contracted personnel are not eligible to apply.

  • Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard active duty officers must be in the grade of O3 and above.
  • U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force active duty officers selected for promotion to O4 and above.
  • Federal Government service civilians in the grade of GS11 and above, or equivalent.

What to Expect

Students will need to complete all core courses: Strategy and War (S&W), Theater Security Decision Making (TSDM), and Joint Maritime Operations (JMO) to receive the NWC diploma. JMO is split into two courses and must be completed in two consecutive quarters, part one immediately followed by part two.

  • Students assigned to NPS will complete the NWC at NPS coursework along with the NPS courses.
  • Seminar-style classes that also include research, writing, and class discussion. These classes are taught by resident NWC faculty permanently assigned to the NWC at NPS program.
  • Core courses are four-credits that lasts an academic quarter. JMO is the only course split into two courses and must be completed in consecutive quarters.

How to Enroll

  • The NWC Master’s Degree is only offered through the NWC Graduate Degree Program (GDP). Only students in the NWC Fleet Seminar Program can apply for GDP.
  • Students who have completed S&W, TSDM, or JMO in another CDE Program may transfer credit to this program.
  • NWC at NPS Program courses does not fulfill requirements for the NWC Master's Degree.
