Henry E. Eccles Library
From our beginning as merely a request for books to support the first U.S. Naval War College (NWC) class in 1885, the Henry E. Eccles Library is the college’s hub of academic and social activity. Our history traces back to the earliest days of the naval institution of higher learning, known as the Navy’s "home of thought."

Library History
The NWC Library has always been central to the college's educational and research programs. Its origins can be traced to a requisition for library books in August 1885. The library was named in honor of the late Rear Admiral Henry Effingham Eccles, a noted logistician, strategist, and author whose association with NWC spanned 38 years.
