Advanced Research Programs

In place of required electives, resident U.S. Naval War College students may apply for the opportunity to participate in Advanced Research Programs (ARPs). These research programs involve group work, individual study, faculty collaboration, wargaming, workshops, and even research trips. From exploring emerging warfare technologies to developing operational strategy, ARPs give participants practical experience that can be applied to their careers.

Named for Vice Admiral Samuel L. Gravely Jr., the CIPI Gravely Program is a graduate-level directed research project that guides student research on cyber operations and the information environment.

This faculty-student program focuses on the tactical and operational level of war at the classified level. Participants use operations analysis and free-play wargaming to examine high-intensity conventional warfare scenarios.

In this part-time program students will examine Russian and U.S. weapons systems, doctrines, and warfighting capabilities in all domains. They will focus on adversary military capabilities, maritime and naval doctrine, and strategy.

Stockdale Leader Development Concentration

This immersive leader development experience engages students in ethics, self-awareness, cognitive readiness, and mental complexity. Students will also research leadership and organizational challenges faced by the Navy and the joint force.

Joint Land, Air, Sea Strategic-Special Program

Building on the College of Naval Warfare core curriculum, the Joint Land, Air, Sea Strategic-Special Program explores how the military, politics, economies, and cultures of the Indo-Pacific theater affect U.S. interests and objectives, further developing theater strategic planning skills.
