2020 begins with major new strains in the trans-Atlantic relationship: over trade, China, Russia, Iran, technology ... Are we reaching a point of divergence, where the trans-Atlantic frame will be replaced by separate European and American perspectives? The Munich Security Conference highlighted the theme of "Westlessness"--the erosion of Euro-American leadership and coordination of the global community of nations. This takes place against the backdrop of U.S. presidential elections and leadership transitions in Europe, notably in Germany. What are the trend lines we should be charting, and what are possible futures whether of trans-Atlantic reconciliation or divorce?
Please join us for a discussion. Our co-moderators will be three Naval War College colleagues who follow these affairs and have their ears as to what is being said both in the U.S. and in Europe: John Cloud, Nikolas Gvosdev and Don Thieme. This lecture is part of the Captain Jerome E. Levy series on geopolitics and geo-economics.
