CDR Ben Smith was commission through the NROTC program at the Maine Maritime Academy. Following flight school, he served a variety of tours as a SH-60B Seahawk pilot. He graduated from Naval War College in 2007 and then served at the Inter-American Defense Board and College (IADB/C) in Washington, DC, as Executive Assistant to the Chairman, IADB and Assistant Chief of Staff, IADC. He spent a year with Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA), as LNO to the Somalia Affairs Unit, before joining NWC and military faculty in spring of 2012.
