Biography

Karen Cahill joined the Royal Navy in 1994 after completing a Bachelor of Arts with honors in teaching. As a surface warfare officer her sea-going units included the frigates HMS London and Grafton, destroyers HMS Cardiff and Nottingham and aircraft carrier HMS Invincible. Ashore she worked in the Ministry of Defense headquarters developing discipline policy, on the Combined Maritime Forces staff and as commanding officer of the Diego Garcia UK military contingent. She also served on the British Peace Support Team (Africa) developing maritime capability. Before joining the Naval War College faculty she served in the U.S. Central Command operations directorate.

A member of the JMO faculty with responsibility for facilitating learning in the ILC/SLC and PMW courses.

Exchange Officer within USCENTCOM J33

Worked within the CENTCOM J3 as a UK embedded officer to respond to emerging threats within the CENTCOM AOR.
2019

UK Maritime Adviser to East Africa

As a member of the British Peace Support Team (Africa) provided guidance and training teams to regional maritime authorities so that they could improve their maritime security through capacity/capability building activities.
2017

Commanding Officer British Forces Diego Garcia

Commanding Officer to the British Forces of the British Indian Ocean Territory - Diego Garcia. Additionally, the Commissioners Representative responsible for the provision of Government services to the island.
