Admiral. E.R. Zumwalt, Jr—Insights from His Daughter
Admiral Elmo R. “Bud” Zumwalt, Jr., the US Navy’s 19th Chief of Naval Operations, was considered controversial during his tenure. History has proven he was quite the visionary. Fifty years ago, the Admiral stated “THERE IS NO BLACK NAVY, NO WHITE NAVY--JUST ONE NAVY-- THE UNITED STATES NAVY.” He directly addressed issues of racism and sexism in the Navy giving women and minorities opportunities to serve based on the merit they were due rather than gender, color, or religion.
Mouzetta Zumwalt-Weathers is Admiral Zumwalt’s youngest child and will share insights on his upbringing and how those early experiences shaped his philosophy and approach in life. She will also discuss the powerful partnership between Bud Zumwalt and his wife, Mouza and his meteoric rise surpassing 33 senior admirals when President Nixon appointed him as CNO during the height of the Vietnam War. Admiral Zumwalt continues to remain the youngest CNO ever appointed at the age of 49 (a record that still has yet to be broken).
This presentation will focus on the moral courage it takes to lead with devotion to humanity and dignity.
