Clausewitz, Corbett and Corvettes: A Melian’s Perspective on Great Power

If it is true that the international affairs in the 21st century will be shaped by a Great Power Competition, which options does that leave for a medium sized European country like Germany? Russia's aggression against Ukraine in 2014 has led to a fundamental realignment of German defence politics, and, increasingly, China's rise is at least perceived as a challenge. However, both are still treated as disconnected phenomena. Germany needs to understand that both Russia and China are trying to exploit the geographical, political and institutional fault lines in the west to strategically isolate themselves and gain freedom of action, dangerously destabilizing the international order German freedom and prosperity rests upon. The maritime domain plays a critical role in their stratagems - making a naval strategic analysis more important than ever.
