South Korean Democracy and U.S.-South Korean Relations
In 1987 after years of military rule, South Korea transitioned to a democracy beginning an amazing story of political development to accompany its record of economic growth begun in the 1960s. Over the past 30 years, South Korea has worked to cement and develop democratic institutions and processes from a long history of authoritarian rule. AMB (ret) Kathleen Stephens will examine the current state of South Korean politics including the successes and challenges that remain. She will also address U.S. policy and U.S.-South Korean relations.
