The Intersection of Maritime Cultural Heritage and Security
The ocean is the world’s greatest museum; however, like museums on land it can be politicized and weaponized. This can include the use of archaeology for nationalist narratives to justify expansionist policies, or it can be as target for terrorism. The sea has long been a source of explosives from ordnance dumps and crashed aircraft, offering a potential source of material for criminal groups. This talk examines the role of underwater cultural heritage in security challenges and soft power. It draws on my academic and public publications, as well as fieldwork experience in Albania, Montenegro, Greece, and Italy.
