Synopsis

China’s maritime rise and its emerging sea power are attracting worldwide attention and reaction. What’s the core significance of sea power for today’s world? What are the major elements of sea power at present? According to these assessment criteria, how should we view the development of China’s sea power? Professor Hu Bo will address the above questions from the perspective of a Chinese scholar. This lecture will introduce his understanding of sea power and his innovation of twelve indicators in four categories that are determinative for evaluating the strength of a given sea power in the post-Mahan Era. Then, Prof. Hu will use these indicators to evaluate the development of China’s sea power. He will also apply these metrics to predict China’s future position in the global maritime power landscape.
