Synopsis
Complex strategic problems sometimes require innovative tactical solutions. Operating in the midst of an armistice, allied ground forces in the Republic of Korea are confronted with what has been described as the most volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous environment to conduct Counter weapons of Mass Destruction Elimination (CWMD-E). Faced with the possibility of conducting operations anywhere along the spectrum of warfare from large scale combat operations against a near peer competitor to security and stability operations in the event of regime collapse, Combined Forces Command-Korea developed a unique ROK-US combined formation to address this challenge. This talk explores the history of the ROK-US Combined Division, and some of the ground breaking joint and combined cross-domain tactical operations that provided the Sub-unified Combatant Commander solutions for key strategic missions to thwart both third party intervention, and to eliminate the threat posed by transnational terrorist organizations to acquire Weapons of Mass Destruction.
