The Newport Arctic Scholars Initiative (NASI) brings together a network of Sailors and scholars from Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and the United States for three in-person group seminars and on-going virtual communication to carry out team-based research. 19 outstanding leaders from the Arctic region will engage in collaborative thinking, analysis, problem solving and multidisciplinary research on questions related to Arctic security and cooperation.
Building off the work of the inaugural 2018-2019 NASI cohort, this year's research focus explores international frameworks for increasing dialogue and security cooperation on political-military issues among nations and navies in the Arctic region. The first in-person group seminar, Jan. 22-24 in Newport, provides an opportunity to launch collaboration and establish goals, timelines and research priorities. The findings and recommendations from the group will be published in a report later this year.
