Flag Officer Assignments

U.S. Naval War College

The secretary of the Navy and chief of naval operations announced the following Navy flag officer assignments, including Rear Adm. Peter A. Garvin, the incoming U.S. Naval War College president, February 21, 2023. The flag officer assignments included 19 graduates of the U.S. Naval War College.

The 20th commander of the Naval Education and Training Command since July 9, 2020, Garvin has served as the 22nd commander of Navy Recruiting Command and commander of the Patrol and Reconnaissance Group and Patrol and Reconnaissance Group Pacific in Norfolk. A career naval pilot, his decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit (four awards), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), the Air Medal (two strike/flight) and various personal, unit, and campaign decorations.

He is a 1989 graduate, with merit, from the U.S. Naval Academy with a B.S. in aerospace engineering (astronautics) and a 2005 graduate of the National War College where he earned a M.S. in national security strategy.
