GANDHINAGAR, India – U.S. Naval War College’s Stockton Center for the Study of International Law collaborated with the U.S. Navy’s International and Operational Law Office at a national security law event in India, March 15-16.
The event, hosted by Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), included officials from the United States, India and Japan.
“Participants exchanged perspectives on possible responses to Chinese actions in the South China Sea, as well as the debate surrounding freedom of navigation operations in the exclusive economic zone,” said Capt. Gregory J. Smith, deputy chairman of the Stockton Center. “The group also discussed the operational flexibility gained through bilateral logistics support agreements and the possibility of expanding on recent developments in this area.”
The intent of the meeting was to enable and inform higher level international dialogue on these matters.
Following the trilateral meetings, U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Alan L. Schuller, a military professor at the Stockton Center, remained at GNLU to serve as an instructor for the law school’s annual International Maritime Academy, held March 18-23.
He provided instruction on the law of the sea, counter-piracy operations, responses to maritime terrorism, artificial intelligence, and the future of naval operations.
The event, which is in its seventh iteration, drew military and civilian participants from multiple countries throughout North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa.
