Naval Leadership and Ethics building

The Naval Leadership and Ethics Center (NLEC) has created an orientation guide, including lodging and uniform details, to help prepare you for your time in Newport.

Before you arrive

Before you arrive for your NLEC training, there are some things you’ll need to know, such as what to pack, where to stay, and what to expect during a typical day.

Lodging Information

Visit the Department of Defense Lodging website to book your accommodations. You’ll select “on orders” under the “purpose of visit” drop-down menu. You’ll also need your arrival and departure dates, paygrade information, and, if applicable, guest details

Uniform Requirements

For the classroom, wear service khakis. We recommend bringing a sweater or light jacket; leather flight jackets are allowable. For socials you may wear civilian clothing.

Prospective Commanding Officers will travel to and from Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, in civilian clothes and be provided ample time to change into your white's before your first event. Uniform for the trip will be Summer Whites/Dress Blues with ribbons.

Technology & App

You can access course material, the schedule, an end-of-course survey, and other details through the NLEC app, downloadable for free through the Apple App Store; however, you will not be able to log in until you arrive on campus and receive your password. Note: The app is only available on iOS devices.

We encourage you to bring an iPad for use in the classroom; but if you do not have one, we can loan you one to use during your time in Newport. We’ll spend some time walking you through the process of accessing wi-fi and setting up the app.

Course Preparation & Myers-Brigg Type Indicator (MBTI)

View your course prerequisites for information about read-ahead material. Once you arrive on campus, we’ll conduct MBTI assessments during a joint session between officers and spouses.

Class Schedule

All NLEC classes typically run each day from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday is the final day for PXOs, and the last course ends at about 3 p.m. All other courses end Friday at 3 p.m.

Childcare Options

The Naval Station Newport Childcare Program offers its services to children six weeks to six years old weekdays from 6:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Space is limited. Call 401-841-4562 for provider availability and details.
