Biography

Capt. Jim Zoulias graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a B.S. in ocean engineering and Boston University with an M.A. in international relations. A career naval pilot, he has over 1,500 hours in the SH-60F/HH-60H Sea Hawk helicopter in support of numerous operations in the Arabian Gulf. Capt. Zoulias also served as an assistant professor at the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, VA where he taught in-residence JPME Phase II. Other assignments include command of Tactical Air Control Squadron 22, navigator of aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) and Team Chief/Deputy Commander of the National Airborne Operations Center at U.S. Strategic Command (STRATCOM).

Professional Highlights

2020

Deputy Commander, National Airborne Operations Center

Led an Operations Team on alert duty aboard the E-4B, executing duties as a command and control node. Ultimately assumed duties as the command deputy, managing a staff and three operations teams comprised of 96 joint personnel.
2018

Began teaching at the Joint Forces Staff College

Joined the faculty of the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, VA. As a faculty with the Joint and Combined Warfighting School, taught JPME Phase II to field grade officers in residence over 10 week courses. Earned designation as an Assistant Professor via the National Defense University.
2016

Navigator, USS CARL VINSON

Deployed with USS CARL VINSON twice to the Western Pacific, navigating in and around the South China Sea, East China Sea and other areas of interest with the INDOPACOM AOR. Tour culminated in the port visit to Danang, Vietnam, the first by a US CVN.
2014

Commander Tactical Air Control Squadron TWO TWO

Spent 15 months as Executive Officer before fleeting up into the command position in 2014. Commanded a unit providing air traffic control support to Amphibious Ready Groups with detachments supporting USS KEARSARGE and USS IWO JIMA for deployments to the AFRICOM theater of operations.
