Biography

Capt. Mark 'munch' Asuncion has amassed significant geo-political experience through his various diplomatic assignments abroad, to include attaché tours in Colombia, Mexico, and Libya, and as the Senior U.S. Official resident Vanuatu. His staff assignments include Director of the Multi-National Cooperation Center at USAFRICOM, NATO Policy Division Chief at the Joint Staff, ACOS for Strategy and Engagement at U.S. SEVENTH Fleet, and Senior Miliary Advisor for the State Department's Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs. He holds a B.A. in Economics from U.C. Berkeley, an M.P.A from Harvard, and a post-graduate diploma in sustainable urban development from Oxford.

Professional Highlights

2023

Became the Senior U.S. Official resident Vanuatu

Tasked by State Department in June 2023 to lead the establishment of the U.S. Diplomatic Mission/U.S. Embassy in Vanuatu. U.S. Embassy Port Vila officially opened on July 19, 2024.
2018

Became the NATO Policy Division Chief on The Joint Staff

At a time of particularly political sensitivity within the Alliance, worked with the US Military Delegation to NATO to develop NATO's first military strategy in over 30 years and the proposed NATO Capstone Concept Framework for NATO force employment, development, and design.
2016

Became Director of the Multinational Cooperation Center and Strategic Outreach at USAFRICOM

Developed and implemented the partnership strategy with international militaries, Intergovernmental Organizations, and Non-Governmental Organizations to achieve mutually shared foreign policy objectives in Africa. Led CCDR Tiger Team, stood up to address the tragic ambush in Tongo Tongo, Niger.
2013

Became the Senior Defense Official/Defense Attache for Libya

Led the evacuation of U.S. Embassy Tripoli on July 26, 2014. Worked with the UN, EU, IGOs, and like-mindeds to counter-terrorism, address mixed migration, and develop political and security solutions in Libya Was the primary interlocutor with the GoL to eliminate ISIS' stronghold in Sirte, Libya.
2010

Deployed to Port-au-Prince, Haiti

Temporarily assigned from U.S. Embassy Bogota to U.S. Embassy Port-au-Prince for expeditionary assistance in the wake of the devastating earthquake in January 2010.
