Biography

Lt. Cmdr. Koenig is an alumnus of the U.S. Naval War College (NWC) and a veteran of Afghanistan, deploying as part of NATO’s Resolute Support Mission in 2016-2017. He deployed with Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 8 aboard USS Bataan (LHD 5) on its 2019-2020 deployment to the Middle East, and with Carrier Strike Group 5 aboard USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) and USS George Washington (CVN 73) in the Western Pacific in 2023 and 2024, respectively. He earned a bachelor of arts in communications at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a master of arts in defense and strategic studies at the NWC, where he returned to serve as the institution’s public affairs officer in July of 2025.

Force Public Affairs Officer, Task Force 70/Carrier Strike Group 5

Directed public affairs for U.S. 7th Fleet's maritime strike and surface warfare forces in Yokosuka, Japan, including the USS George Washington (CVN 73) and USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) Carrier Strike Groups.
2021

Public Affairs Officer, Submarine Readiness Squadron 32

Oversaw public affairs for as many as 24 Los Angeles- and Virginia-class fast-attack submarines based in Groton, Connecticut, and Kittery, Maine, as well as the Undersea Warfighting Development Center.
2019

Public Affairs Officer, Navy Public Affairs Support Element-East

Augmented Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 8 during the 2019-2020 USS Bataan (LHD 5) Amphibious Ready Group deployment to the U.S. European Command and U.S. Central Command areas of responsibility.
2016

Print and digital communications task force lead, Resolute Support Mission-Afghanistan

Managed strategic messaging across multiple print and digital communications platforms for NATO forces operating in Afghanistan.
2014

Assistant Department Head, U.S. 5th Fleet Navy Reserve Public Affairs

Managed multimedia production and media engagement in the port of Aqaba, Jordan, during Exercise Eager Lion, served as the deputy public affairs officer for the Bahrain International Air Show, among other public affairs, training and administrative tasking.
