Tactics and Strategies to Defeat Islamist Extremism
This Lectures of Opportunity on "Tactics and Strategies to Defeat Islamist Extremism" will focus on several typical groups such as ISIS, Al-Qa'eda, and Boko Haram and their franchises in the African Sahel, the Horn of Africa and the Middle East. It will analyze how such criminal (mujarimun) groups distort Islam (mujahideen) with the anthropological framework of "revitalistic movements." Using the right terminology is important during the recruitment (Dawa) phase, when they are most vulnerable and when counter-terrorism intelligence has the greatest opportunities. When the mobilization phase (Biya) is reached the time for counter-terrorist intelligence work is rapidly shrinking and operational martyrdom (Shaheed) actions may soon appear with kinetic "solutions" the only recourse. Thus, this strategic framework shows the importance of a range of intelligence collection when the greatest opportunity exists to disrupt recruitment, locate terrorist networks and leadership cadres at their most vulnerable and exposed. Grassroots work is required to "see or hear something," "Say something".
