Since the end of 2013, China has pursued its territorial claims by building large fortresses in the South China Sea. In the past year, it has focused on strengthening its maritime claims and control around features. Three years after the landmark tribunal ruling in the Philippines case against China, governments have gone quiet about the award and Beijing’s actions have become more egregious.
This lecture will explore recent developments in the South China Sea, how Southeast Asian states and others are responding to China, and what these developments mean for the rule of law, the United States, and US competition with China.
