The 26 December 2004 Southeast Asian earthquake and the ensuing tsunamis destroyed cities, towns, and huge coastal areas in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, India, Malaysia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, the Andaman and Nicobar islands, the Maldives, the Seychelles, Somalia, Tanzania, and Kenya. The U.S. Geological Survey has estimated the human toll at 157,577 people killed, 26,763 missing, and 1,075,350 displaced.
