U.S. Naval War College (NWC) President Rear Adm. Darryl Walker and Provost Dr. Stephen Mariano met with the Honorable Christopher R. Hill, former U.S. Ambassador to Serbia, Iraq, South Korea, Poland and Macedonia during a visit to the college’s Newport, RI campus, July 30.
The leaders discussed the contributions of U.S. State Department and interagency students and faculty to the exchange of perspectives and experiences necessary for NWC’s mission to provide high quality professional military education and inform U.S. decision makers on matters of national security.
They also discussed the importance of a whole-of-government approach to overcoming current and future security challenges, and how NWC integrates this concept into its curriculum.
NWC currently has 14 students from the U.S. State Department enrolled and 21 from eight other federal agencies.
Notable NWC alumni serving in the State Department include Christopher W. Smith, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Eastern Europe and Policy and Regional Affairs in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs; John T. Ice, Chargé d’affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Nouakchott, Mauritania; and Lia Miller, Consul General at the U.S. Consulate General in Barcelona, Spain.
