At the first Bridging the Straits conference in Newport in December 2018, we learned that the U.S. Navy and U.S. academic professionals must do a better job of incorporating other states’ interests and capabilities into their own strategic thinking.

The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Maritime Command and Staff College, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation and the U.S. Naval War College seek to engage with regional experts on the future of regional maritime competition.

This conference brings together leading security studies scholars with strategic thinkers within the U.S. Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force with the expectation that both sides have much to learn from each other. This workshop seeks to “bridge the gap” between the policy and academic worlds at this crucial point in regional maritime competition.
