On Dec. 11-12, 2014, the China Maritime Studies Institute hosted a two-day workshop in Newport, entitled “U.S. and Chinese Perspectives on the Blue Economy.”
This was the first-known event to focus on comparing and contrasting U.S. and Chinese approaches to the blue economy, a still-evolving concept aimed specifically at more environmentally sustainable economic growth and innovation-oriented, marine maritime and naval development.
Participants included representatives from government, academia, think tanks and industry, including: U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Joint Staff, U.S. Coast Guard, State Department, Naval Undersea Warfare Center, U.S. Naval War College, and U.S. Senate. It also included participation from the People's Republic of China’s State Oceanic Administration, Qingdao Ocean University and Shanghai Ocean University of China.
The workshop was conducted under not-for-attribution rules; this summary therefore presents an overview of the discussion without attribution to individual participants except where permitted.
