At the time, Admiral Rickover pushed an idea that nuclear technology need not be focused only on nuclear weapons, but also nuclear power. He challenged naval leadership, subordinates, Congress, and civilian industry with the domineering leadership style—but he was undeniably successful in shaping Naval nuclear power, professionalism, and naval warfare itself to this day.
Today, mission assurance for national security depends on energy assurance—both operationally and with energy generation and transmission to our military bases. Reports suggest that approximately 95% to 99% of U.S. military installations rely on the civilian power grid. This makes the availability of national security resources dependent on systems that are vulnerable to manmade threats and natural disasters. Energy security requires redundancy, reliability, and diversification. To that end, a key source of the solution set is nuclear energy.
The Department of War has made significant progress with nuclear energy. This event is to record the progress to date, share these successes with the audience, and explore what is next on the nuclear power horizon.
